Melbourne United is thrilled to unveil its new Multicultural Uniform ahead of The Multicultural Game against the South East Melbourne Phoenix in Throwdown XVII, Delivered by DoorDash, on Sunday 6 November at 4pm.

Featuring a design of flags from around the globe amalgamated into one pattern and featured within the word ‘UNITED’, Melbourne looks to embrace the multicultural city in which they play.

The jerseys will also house the flags of each player's home country above their number, and have their name featured in that nation's colours on the back of the uniform.

The design is a collaboration between Melbourne United and design agency SouthSouthWest. Melbourne United GM of Digital, Marketing and Communications Tom van de Vusse stated the focus of the jerseys was to highlight the diversity within the team and the city in which we play.

“One of the three key values we champion at Melbourne United is inclusion, and to be able to celebrate this through not only our Multicultural Game and Multicultural Festival, but also through a bespoke uniform, is really special,” van de Vusse said.

“Basketball is a sport that is thoroughly multicultural at its core, as is the city of Melbourne. As our city returns to life following a difficult few years, we see these jerseys and this Multicultural Game as being able to bring the many cultures we have in our city together, through the power of basketball.”

These sentiments were echoed by United CEO Nick Truelson, who touched on his excitement ahead of the uniform debut.

“Our annual Multicultural Uniform has become a much anticipated and incredibly important part of our last few seasons as a way to not only embrace our multicultural city but also to celebrate the multiculturalism of our team.

“Our purpose as an organisation is to use the power of basketball to inspire, entertain and enrich people's lives, and these jerseys and this game are a perfect opportunity to achieve that goal.”

The uniform continues the tradition started during the team’s finals campaign in NBL21, where United wore the first version of the Multicultural uniform in the semi-final series against the Phoenix.

The newly designed jerseys will be available for purchase at The Multicultural Game on Sunday 6 November at John Cain Arena or online, as well as other Multicultural Game-themed merchandise.

Limited tickets for the game remain available here.
