Melbourne United has continued its vow to help inspire and enrich the community through the power of basketball as part of its partnership with St Bernard’s College in Essendon.

Across the school’s year, NBL Legend and Melbourne United Basketball Academy coach Lanard Copeland has been working closely with their athletes, helping develop the group and guide students to play at the next level.

Speaking to MU Media, Copeland touched on how he has seen the partnership grow and the importance of running similar programs moving forward.

“It’s a great partnership, I think it’s fantastic that Melbourne United are going back to grassroots and helping these schools to try to develop these young kids.

“We’re trying to help them get to that next level, because in order to get to the next level you’ve got to come in and train every day and you’ve got to put in the work. I’m trying to bring in some expertise because I’m old, I’ve been around,” he laughed

These sentiments were echoed by St Bernard’s Director of Sport Paul Groves, who said the program has been positive for both the school’s students, as well as its coaches and staff.

“We’ve partnered with Melbourne United to help enhance our basketball program for our students which has been really beneficial,” he continued.

“Obviously having Lanard coming on as the coach on the back of Warrick Giddey coaching as well is enabling our staff to get a bit of personal development as well through this elite talent.”
