In March of 2009, Joe Ingles played his last game in the NBL.
The 21-year-old did a bit of everything for the South Dragons, tallying nine points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals as his side clinched a 21-point victory over the Melbourne Tigers in Game 5 of the Championship Series.
The star forward continued to collect trophies once he departed the NBL, claiming a title in the EuroLeague, as well as domestically in Spain and Israel.
He then spent 12 successful seasons in the NBA, winning close to 60% of his 810 games with the Jazz, Bucks, Magic and Timberwolves.
Now set to return to Melbourne, Ingles said he has no intention of doing anything other than winning.
"The biggest thing for me is coming back and competing, and I’ve been a winner my whole life, and I plan to continue that in the NBL,” Ingles told The Age.
“I, obviously, want to play. There’s no question about that. And I believe I would have never signed this deal if I didn’t think I could do it for the next couple of years.”
The five-time Olympian elaborated further when speaking on the ABC Sport Daily podcast.
“I'm extremely confident in myself to be able to come back and play.
“I'm very well aware that I'm 38 years old and will be 39 by the time the season starts, and could happily go sit by the river here in Orlando and watch my kids and do their sports. But (I’m) really excited by it (joining United). I definitely wouldn't do it if I didn't believe that I could help Melbourne win.”
