International coaches look to United for wisdom

Since coming into Melbourne United as it’s Head Coach in the 2017/18 season, Dean Vickerman has garnered ultimate respect from his fellow coaches around the globe.
Boasting two championships, three Grand Final appearances and five straight trips to the postseason, it’s clear to see why coaches from far and wide, such as up-and-coming Serbian coach Jelena Todorovic, would seek out Vickerman and his program to learn.
That is exactly what the 28-year-old Todorovic did last week, coming into Melbourne United’s home base of Hoop City Cheltenham for a few days to see what she could take away as a developing senior coach.
“I’ve known coach Dean for some years now… He welcomed me here to Melbourne,” she said.
“I’ve always followed his work and have admired what he’s been able to do here in Melbourne creating history.
“I like the way he reads the game, the x’s and o’s of how he operates. He’s definitely one of the best NBL coaches ever and I think he still has a lot more to accomplish.”
A former player in her own right, Todorovic transitioned into coaching after her playing career finished, quickly rising up the ranks while splitting time between Europe and Australia.
Having learnt from the likes of Vickerman, Dimitrios Itoudis and former NBL championship winning coach Joey Wright, Todorovic has established herself as a respected mind in European basketball, recently joining Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Greek National Team for their FIBA World Cup qualification games.
“They are all coaches I have a great respect for and I want to learn from. I’m trying to take the best bits of everywhere I go and learn from everywhere. I want to learn and adapt every day… From this I can build my own philosophy and coaching style.”
With United’s season fast approaching, Todorovic was impressed by what she saw from last year’s minor premiers, and praised the organisation's family atmosphere.
“It’s clear that from the moment someone walks into Hoop City, the entire club will go out of their way to make you feel welcome.
“On the court I think that helps as it’s clear that all these guys like and respect each other, and have a healthy respect for their coaches.”
This comradery is set to be on full display On 8 September, when United face the Brisbane Bullets in Ballarat.
