Melbourne United have come away with the first win of the 2021 Hungry Jack's NBL Blitz at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.
Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. quickly made his presence felt on the interior, dominating all comers while running the pick and roll to perfection with star guard Matthew Dellavedova.
Using his great hands and soft touch, Jo tallied 17 first quarter points equalling the most ever scored by a Melbourne United player in an opening term.
With the Breakers defense struggling to figure out what to do with Jo in the paint, Delly found seams in the defense, getting to the rim for his first baskets in a United uniform.
Despite the success Melbourne were finding inside, fouls kept New Zealand within reach to close the first quarter, with United only able to take a 25-23 lead after 10 minutes.
The second term saw United slow slightly on offense, as the Breakers defense did well limiting opportunities.
The trio of Finn Delany, Jeremiah Martin and Hugo Besson found success inside and out, each scoring nine points to help New Zealand pull ahead by three points going into the main break.
After a somewhat disappointing second quarter, United locked in on defense to start the second half, going on a 12-0 run to start the term.
A big part of that run was Jo, who once again torched the Breakers to the tune of 13 points in the quarter.
Searching for answers after being held to just two points across the first five minutes of action, New Zealand were able to get back in rhythm thanks to some aggressive play from Delaney and Martin.
Taking a one point advantage into the final 10 minutes, United’s experience shone through.
Led by a great all-round effort from the entire side, Melbourne took control, extending its lead to as many as 10 points.
Jo continued his dominance inside the paint, finishing with 37 points and 11 rebounds, while captain Chris Goulding (15 points, five rebounds) came through with some clutch baskets to close out the 90-84 victory.
Melbourne will take home six points in the NBL Blitz standings.
Game Two of United's Blitz campaign will take place on Monday 15th November against the Sydney Kings at 7.30pm. Fans can tune in live via Kayo Sports.
