Match Recap: Semi Final Game 2 v Tasmania JackJumpers

Written by Melbourne United Media

Melbourne United will look to secure its spot in the Hungry Jack’s NBL22 Grand Final on Monday night after going down in a hard-fought road loss to Tasmania.

The game started well, with Matthew Dellavedova, Shea Ili and Jo Lual-Acuil Jr all scoring early to give the visitors a 6-2 lead.

This advantage unfortunately didn’t last long for United, as the JackJumpers stormed back in front with a 9-0 run of their own.

Caleb Agada came into the game and provided some instant energy for Melbourne, breaking Tassie’s run, however poor rebounding and missed opportunities at the free-throw line meant the home side took a 17-12 lead at the end of the first term.

This didn’t look much better to start the second period, as United went scoreless for nearly three minutes before a JLA and-1 got the defending champs rolling.

Melbourne’s energy seemed to rise throughout the term, as Agada continued his strong start while hustle plays from Ili, Yudai Baba and Ariel Hukporti had the JJ’s reeling.

An ill-timed goaltending violation gave Tasmania an extra two points and a four-point lead heading into the main break, however the momentum was firmly in United’s favour.

The third term, like the others, was a back-and-forth 10 minutes, however Melbourne’s primary weapons started to fire.

Chris Goulding scored 11 of his 18 points in the period, including a trio of three-pointers, while Agada knocked in his own long-range make to give United its first lead since the opening minutes.

Tassie were able to weather the storm, drawing the game even at 59-59 heading into the final quarter.

CA continued to live up to his “Hard-To-Guard” nickname, knocking down a stepback three to open the term.

Melbourne was looking poised to take home the victory, however some tough shot-making from the JJs, combined with a number of tough late fouls, allowed Tassie to pull away down the stretch and force a game three.

United will be looking for a huge turnout from its fans in Game 3 at John Cain Arena, which is slated for 7.30pm on Monday night.

Melbourne will once again wear its Multicultural Jerseys for the game, a uniform which the defending champions have never lost in during the postseason.
