Melbourne United is proud to unveil the club’s Indigenous Round uniform for NBL24, designed by proud Taungurung woman, Tiffany Hunter.
Titled ‘Narrm Bundima - Doormala’, the artwork is a representation of United’s purpose and values, while encapsulating the history of basketball within Melbourne.
When designing the piece, Tiffany Hunter aimed to connect the culture of Narrm to the artwork, creating something to be showcased and that Melbourne’s Indigenous community could be proud of.
“Being able to form Melbourne United’s story into this piece was really significant for me,” she said.
“Being able to connect art to culture is something I’ve always had a strong passion for, but had never really had the opportunity to do. To be able to showcase aboriginal culture in a professional sporting environment is something that is really important, as it allows our culture to be represented at the highest level for all to see.
“Rounds like the Indigenous Round make me feel strong. It makes me feel proud and it makes me feel included. It gives me a sense of pride that things are headed in the right direction as a community. It reassures me that as a nation we’re seeing positive change.
“Representation is so important, so I want young people to be able to see this jersey and know that they can live out their dreams and know that anything is possible for them.”
The design features a large circle on the back representing United’s purpose, which surrounds a boomerang, symbolising the commitment to walking the journey with First Nations people towards reconciliation.
This is positioned alongside a kangaroo print, illustrating the team’s goal to always move forward, both on the court and within their local community.
Also featured on the back are six circles, one for each of the six NBL titles won by United and the Melbourne Tigers.
Running up the side of the jersey is a snake, which provides the players with strength and resilience, while the spears depicted across the uniform represent the tools United’s players can utilise against their opponents.
