Melbourne United will host the opening game of the 2021 Hungry Jack's NBL Season, matching up against cross-town rivals the South East Melbourne Phoenix for Throwdown V on Sunday January 10, 2020 (venue and time of game TBA).
The NBL today released the first five rounds of what will be a rolling schedule for the season. A total of 39 games will be played over the first 37 days of the season in front of fans across Australia.
NBL Commissioner Jeremy Loeliger said the schedule would be announced in stages during the season and the NBL was still considering the option of using a hub for part of the season. He also suggested that the regular season was expected to finish in May ahead of the finals.
“Capacities at venues will vary according to their location but the aim is to play as many games in front of as many fans as possible as restrictions are further eased over the coming months.” Loeliger said.
The rolling schedule will allow for greater flexibility that shall protect the longevity of the season.
Indoor sporting venues in Victoria are currently capped at a 25% capacity with a 1.5m social distancing protocol in place. However, we are optimistic and hopeful that the timing of our season will allow for further capacity increases.
Melbourne United will be doing everything possible to fit as many fans into home games as possible but will prioritise access for Melbourne United Members and corporate hospitality Members.
Melbourne United CEO Vince Crivelli welcomed today’s announcement, albeit without the exact details of games confirmed.
“It has certainly been a long off-season, and to finally have a date set for the return of NBL basketball to Melbourne is incredibly exciting.” Crivelli said.
“Given the complexities of the situation it is understandable that there is a bit more detail to be confirmed, such as venues and times of games. We appreciate the patience of the fans, as this isn’t an easy task.”
“With that said, we can’t wait to go to battle in the fifth Throwdown and take on the Phoenix. Our team is ready, and raring to go.”
“Planning a season schedule is a really tough task. But to do it during a global pandemic with restrictions varying from state to state, while trying to look after the interest of the league, 9 clubs, varied stakeholders, and most importantly the fans across the whole country; it’s incredible, really.”
“To that, we acknowledge and thank the NBL, the Victorian Government, and the many stakeholders involved to get NBL21 underway.”
Start times and venues for games will be confirmed in the coming weeks. Games will be broadcast live on SBS, ESPN and SKY Sports (NZ).
