Melbourne United is thrilled to unveil its new Multicultural Jersey ahead of The Multicultural Game on Sunday afternoon.

Emblazoned with the flags of United players and staff, the Melbourne United Multicultural uniform celebrates the many cultures within our club.

This season the uniform will feature the flags of Samoa, South Sudan, Nigeria, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Togo, USA and Armenia. The jerseys will also house a motif of the flag of each player's home country inside the number on the back of the uniform.

The design is a collaboration between Melbourne United and design agency SouthSouthWest. Melbourne United GM of Digital, Marketing and Communications Tom van de Vusse stated the focus of the jerseys was to highlight the diversity within the team and the city in which we play.

“Melbourne United highly values inclusion and multiculturalism, and to be able to celebrate this through not only our Multicultural Game and Multicultural Festival, but also through a bespoke uniform, is really special,” van de Vusse said.

“Basketball is a sport that is thoroughly multicultural at its core, as is the city of Melbourne. As our city looks to bounce back from the past few years, we see our Multicultural Game as being able to bring the many cultures we have in our city together, through the power of basketball.”

These sentiments were echoed by United CEO Nick Truelson, who touched on his excitement ahead of the uniform debut.

“Our now annual Multicultural jersey has become a very important part of our last few seasons to not only embrace our multicultural city but also to celebrate our multiculturalism of our team and tell stories of the background of our roster on and off the court.

“Last year the team wore the Multicultural jersey throughout our finals run to the NBL championship and we are looking forward to seeing our players once again wear our latest Multicultural jerseys at John Cain Arena in front of our adoring fans.”

The uniform continues the tradition started during the team’s finals campaign in NBL21, where United wore the first version of the Multicultural uniform in the semi-final series against the Phoenix.

Due to the pride they felt while wearing the bespoke jersey, the team chose to continue to wear the uniform and went on to clinch the championship by sweeping the Perth Wildcats.

The newly designed jerseys will be available for purchase at The Multicultural Game on Sunday 20 March at John Cain Arena or online, as well as Multicultural Game tee shirts.

Tickets for the game remain available here.
