NBL23 Debrief: Isaac Humphries

Written by Melbourne United Media

Needless to say, it’s been a big year for Isaac Humphries.

The towering big-man not only moved to a new city to star for a new team, he became a global name following his courageous decision to be his true self and come out as the only openly gay basketball player currently playing in one of the world’s top leagues.

Looking back on a season that he says ended too suddenly, Humphries spoke about his first year with the organisation.

“All-in-all the first season with United was fantastic,” he said.

“I think it ended a little early and we’re all very disappointed about that, but I think we can look back on the year and have a lot of positives and a lot of good memories.

“Obviously I had a very big season in my personal life with coming out and Melbourne United was just such an unbelievable place to have that experience.”

While no one would question his talent on the floor, a pair of injury-shortened seasons prior to NBL23 has some doubting Humphries’ ability to contribute consistently coming into United’s campaign.

Set on proving the doubters wrong, ‘Ice’ went to work, leading the entire league in blocked shots per game across his 23 outings.

“I had goals coming in with my injuries to get through as much of the year as possible… I’m very happy with how my body held up, that was a big question mark for a lot of people. Everyone can now rest easy knowing I can now play through a season.

“I had a lot of people counting me out and a lot of people not willing to take the risk on me last offseason and I think I proved everyone wrong… I played with a big chip on my shoulder to prove that I could be the same dominant player that I am.

“I’m very grateful to Melbourne United for taking that risk, I think we grew together. I felt very at-home in this environment, I felt like everyone wanted my best interest on the court.”

So many of his most spectacular moments came at John Cain Arena, where he suited up for all 14 of United’s home games.

Despite having played in front of packed out stadiums across the globe, Humphries said nothing in his career has felt the same as the support he experienced from the Melbourne United faithful on a nightly basis.

“One thing that is pretty consistent with teams is the fans… but I have to say Melbourne United games feel pretty special… they feel like the hot ticket in town,” he continued.

“I can say I’ve not been a part of a fan base that’s stuck by us that much, it was great to be a part of.”

As he looks to continue perfecting his game in the offseason, the big-man said he would jump at the chance to return to United in the pursuit of an NBL Championship.

“I think everything in my life is falling into place here. I’ve always wanted to play for Melbourne United and I’ve had the chance to and don’t want to not play for Melbourne United, now that I’m here, I’d love to stay.”
