Unselfish United set franchise assist record

Written by Melbourne United Media

It was all smiles in the coaches rooms following Melbourne United’s 108-73 drubbing of the New Zealand Breakers on Sunday afternoon.

The victory was a whole-team effort, with 12 of 13 United players hitting the scoresheet as the defending champs broke the franchise record for assists (32).

Speaking following the win, assistant coach Rhys Carter spoke about his excitement with the team performance.

“The way we played really made us happy,” he said.

“Everyone played their role, everyone got touches, everyone got shots, when we’re at our best that’s how it looks.”

With Melbourne comfortably leading for much of the game, Head Coach Dean Vickerman opted to give extended minutes to seldom-seen development players Zac Triplett and David Okwera, as well as Callum Dalton.

Carter spoke about how great it was to see the trio get an opportunity to get on the court, given how hard they work every day in practice.

“It’s great to see. Dean went early with Zac Triplett and threw him out there for a hit. He did his job, fit in well and played in our system.

“Getting the young guys that haven’t gotten to play a lot lately some minutes was great, Cal Dalton got to play, David Okwera hit a shot at the end and played some solid minutes.”
