Vickerman looking for more consistent effort against JackJumpers

Heading into Melbourne United’s final game of the regular season, Head Coach Dean Vickerman is looking for a more consistent effort from his side compared to their last game against Tasmania.

The two sides last faced off at John Cain Arena on 6 February, with the JackJumpers taking home the W off the back of a 36-point opening quarter.

Speaking to media on Thursday afternoon, Vickerman said his group needs to be better this time around, especially as they head into the Hungry Jack's NBL Finals.

“Last time they came into our building and scored 36 points in the first quarter.

“They were better than us down the stretch in the way that they closed out so I’m sure there’ll be some ebbs and flows in this game as well and hopefully we’re more consistent in what we’re doing this time around rather than giving up a 36-point quarter.”

Currently riding a league-best five-game winning streak, Vickerman says the test of facing a quality opponent like Tasmania the week before the Finals will be great for his side.

“There’s no better preparation for a finals game than playing against a team that is so close to the finals and is going to play at an amazingly high level for their last home game of the year.”

A key difference between the last game and Saturday’s contest will be the addition of Ariel Hukporti and Jack White, who both missed the Round 10 contest due to COVID protocols.

Hukporti said it was difficult watching his side go down from the sidelines, particularly as he had a strong performance (11 points, six rebounds) in United’s Round 5 matchup with Tasmania.

“It was pretty hard to see the team lose because I could not do anything.

“I was out because of COVID, Whitey (Jack White) was out because of COVID, so we were missing two players that can protect the rim… I’m looking forward to getting that win (back).”

Vickerman touched on his excitement at having Hukporti and White available for Saturday to go up against the JackJumpers undersized bigs.

“Their bigs, even with Magnay out, are undersized but are strong. They get position really well and stop you from getting the position that you want.

“There is a size-factor having Jack and Ariel back that will really help us on the offensive boards and with some switches that may occur as well.”

United will face Tasmania at MyState Bank Arena on Saturday 23 April from 5:30pm (AEST). The game will be broadcast live on ESPN via Kayo and Foxtel.
