NBL veteran and club leader Brad Newley will return to Melbourne United for the NBL24 season.

A 309-game NBL pro with 10 years of top-flight European play, you would be challenged to find a more experienced player heading into the coming season.

Having spent the last two years with United, where he has played every game, Newley has proved to be an ageless wonder with the ability to impact the game from all over the court.

Speaking to MU Media, Newley voiced his excitement about his return, and the potential he sees in Melbourne’s playing group for the upcoming season.

“I’m really appreciative to be getting another chance to play for this great club,” he said.

“I want to help get us back to where we should be and that’s towards the top of the NBL ladder.

“This group that’s coming together is really special.I like the young guys we’ve brought in and how they complement the returning players we’ve got, it’s a nicely balanced squad and it’s going to be great fun to be a part of.

“Looking at the end of last year, we weren’t that far off the mark, we just needed health, and this group that’s been put together has a lot of depth. A lot of them are a lot younger than me, but they’ll give me energy, and I’ll hopefully be able to give them some energy as well.”

One player excited to see Newley remain with the team is long-time friend and former Boomers teammate Chris Goulding.

After battling in the league for years, the pair have combined to create a strong pairing over the past two seasons.

“I’m really happy for Newls and his family to extend with the club again,” Goulding said.

“He’s really embraced the culture at Melbourne United and has become a real positive driver of it recently, while bringing that veteran mentality that every team needs.”

Newley joins Goulding, Jo Lual-Acuil Jr, Luke Travers, Shea Ili, Ariel Hukporti, Tanner Krebs, Flynn Cameron, Kyle Bowen, Zac Triplett and Campbell Blogg as contracted players heading into the NBL24 season.
