Cameron ready to ‘learn from the best’ at United

Written by Melbourne United Media

As he heads into his first season of professional basketball, young Kiwi guard Flynn Cameron is eagerly anticipating what he can learn from his new teammates.

Following five years in college and a number of appearances with the New Zealand national team, Cameron said having a pair of teammates like Shea Ili and Chris Goulding will be huge for his development.

“It’s awesome, Shea’s one of the best defenders in the league, and then having Chris Goulding at the 2, I feel like I’ve got the best of both worlds in terms of learning from two of the elite guards in this league,” he said.

“I’m just excited to learn from the best. They’ve been in this league for a long time. Seeing how they go about their day-to-day routine, how they stay at the top of their game.

“There’s a lot that goes into being a pro and I think these are two of the best guys to learn from.”

Cameron has a unique connection with both players, having spent time battling with Ili as part of a recent Tall Blacks training camp, while also having watched Goulding go to work with the Gold Coast Blaze.

“Shea Ili is a big-time player… I was able to play with him this past Summer as part of the Tall Blacks camp. He’s definitely the best defender I’ve ever gone against,” he relented.

“Every position I was like ‘Okay, this is for real. This is something that’s going to help me get better.’

“Chris Goulding, it’s awesome to get the opportunity to play with him. Having been around him going back to the Blaze days and seeing everything he’s accomplished since then, it feels really special.

“He played with and then was coached by my dad… I just remember being a little kid, having interactions with him, I’d play the little kid card, maybe fake a little cry to get his attention.”

Cameron is set to complete his studies at UC Riverside in California before heading down to Melbourne and beginning his training with United.

The only way to make sure you’ve got your seat locked in to see Cameron take the court alongside Shea Ili and CG43 is by becoming a member!
