Melbourne United assistant coach Jacob Chance says his time as Head Coach of the Australian Boomers during this past FIBA Window was a special experience.
Back at United’s home of Hoop City, Chance talked about how the group he took away with him, which included Chris Goulding and Kyle Bowen, helped him hit the ground running.
“It was an awesome first up experience as Head Coach. I had a really good group of support staff and players,” he said.
“I thought we did a great job of connecting the group to the Boomers culture and previous teams that have come before.
“We had great leaders in Chris Goulding and Nick Kay as our Co-Captains, and then guys like Mitch Norton, DJ Vasiljevic, Sam Froling, guys that have been in these situations before.
“It was fun to have a good mix of enjoying the cities but then locking in when it came to practice and game time.
“We got two really important wins in the grand scheme of things against two teams that came out with a lot of energy.”
Registering a pair of huge wins (101-48 and 98-75), which clinched Australia’s spot at the 2025 Asia Cup in Saudi Arabia, Chance said it was special to experience the trip alongside Bowen, who registered his first official minutes with the Boomers, and Goulding.
“I’ve known KB (Bowen) for a long time and I was so excited to see him be rewarded for all the work he puts in.
“He’s an elite worker, he gets in the trenches and makes such an impact with his unselfish play. His ability as a willing screener to get guys open and facilitate for others is something every coach would love to have.
“With Chris, he’s really just such a unique player. The shots he makes are backbreakers, they can be debilitating for teams to play against, I should know having coached against him for so long.
“In both games, he kind of took over and helped push the games out beyond any doubt.”
The only way to make sure you're in the building to see Chance, Bowen and Goulding is by securing your seat for our next game against the Sydney Kings from 2:30pm on 1 December.
