Community Unites for Multicultural 3x3 Tournament

Melbourne United had the pleasure of hosting over 150 hoopers on Sunday afternoon for its 3x3 Community Tournament at Hoop City Cheltenham.

Taking place on Boonwurrung land, the event was opened by a Welcome to Country from Aunty Carolyn Briggs, before the action kicked off.

20 teams participated across four divisions of competitive play, Mixed 12-14s, Mixed 16-18s, Girls 16-18s and Mixed opens.

With the likes of Chris Goulding, Zac Triplett and Darryl ‘Dmack’ McDonald in attendance watching the action, the intensity was through the roof.

Mixed 12-14s was won by No Hops, while the Mixed 16-18s was taken out by the Golden Gladiators.

Team Akuech came out on top in the Girls 16-18s, and the Opens Mixed was won by the Helping Hoops Future 3.

Our friends at Roll’d Vietnamese kept the hungry crowd fed throughout the event, which carried the important message of inclusion throughout thanks to the likes of the Koorie Basketball Academy and Helping Hoops.

Melbourne United Community Engagement Manager Nicola Parkinson praised all those in attendance for helping make the event all that it was.

“It was a great day for basketballers to play in a fun and inclusive space where young people of culturally diverse backgrounds are front and centre.

“At MU we want to help leverage the power of basketball to strengthen social inclusion, and we feel as though Sunday’s event did just that.”
