DrinkWise Preview: NBL24 - Round 9 vs Cairns Taipans

Melbourne United are set to return to the court on Sunday afternoon when they face off against the Cairns Taipans in the club’s Member Appreciation Game.

A win would further build on United’s league-best record, while also extending Melbourne’s winning streak to three games.

Having won 10 of their previous 12 games against the Taipans, including their most recent meeting, momentum appears to firmly be on MU’s side.

For Cairns, a bounce-back effort will be needed to secure the win, especially after a difficult loss to the Brisbane Bullets on Friday evening.

PLAYER TO WATCH

Set to make his return from injury, Matthew Dellavedova will aim to seamlessly slot back into United’s lineup on Sunday.

Having missed Melbourne’s past two games with a calf complaint, Dellavedova looked sharp across the FIBA Break, impressing teammates and coaches with his play.

In three previous meetings, the NBA championship winner has never lost to the Taipans, averaging 10.7 points and four assists per game while shooting at over 45% from deep.

Look for ‘Delly’ to instantly pick up where he left off and impose himself on the contest.

KEY MATCHUP

The Taipans have gone to a more small-ball lineup across the season, meaning United forward Luke Travers could spend a significant period of the game matched up with Cairns sharpshooter Bul Kuol.

Kuol is having a career-best year, registering high-markers in scoring, rebounding and outside shooting. For Travers, locking down the wing will be crucial, especially after the Taipans star scored just eight points in the loss to the Bullets.

On the other end, ‘LT’ can look to use his size advantage to get into the paint for scoring opportunities, as he did in the second half against the Kings, where he scored 18 points.

THE OTHER GUYS

Featuring a lineup full of length and athleticism, the Taipans aim to overwhelm opponents with their energetic brand of basketball.

Import guard pairing Tahjere McCall and Patrick Miller can both use their strength to get inside, creating opportunities for themselves and their teammates.

Sam Waardenburg has also been impressive over his first season and a half in the league, stretching the floor with his shooting.

One X-factor for the visitors will be the play of rookie Taran Armstrong, who has showcased the ability to confound defences with his passing ability.
