With Game 1 of the NBL24 Championship series right around the corner, Melbourne United are hoping the sheer amount of experience in their playing group has helped ready them for their clash with the JackJumpers.
Speaking to media on Friday afternoon, Jo Lual-Acuil Jr, who is one of six different NBL Championship winners on United’s roster, said the likes of Matthew Dellavedova and Chris Goulding have been crucial throughout the Playoffs.
“Delly (Dellavedova) is huge, we lean on his experience but we also have Shili (Shea Ili), we have CG (Goulding), LT (Luke Travers) has been in some Grand Finals, I’ve been in some Grand Finals, so as much as we lean on Delly and his experience I think it’s a collective effort, Newls as well has been huge for us.
“We just have a wealth of experience that’s been able to help at different times.”
This experience has allowed Melbourne to weather storms across the course of the season, with no greater example coming in Game 1 of their Playoff series against the Illawarra Hawks.
Trailing by 16 points with seven minutes remaining, United were able to claw their way back into the contest, sending the game into overtime before ultimately coming away with the victory.
Lual-Acuil Jr believes the solution-based nature of MU’s mindset is a huge reason for their success in NBL24.
“I think we have a good mix of age and experience,” he explained.
“When things don’t go right or we have any sort of adversity, we have a calmness to us. I think all year we’ve been very solution based so we always just want answers (and to find) different solutions to whatever problems we might be having.”
