Grassroots Basketball Stories - Altona Laverton Eagles

While at the highest reaches of sport, the result of a game of basketball can seem like the most important thing, it’s crucial to remember that at the grassroots level bringing people together to simply enjoy the game should be first and foremost.

That is certainly the mindset of Altona Laverton Eagles president Justin Magro, who shared his view on the importance of grassroots basketball.

“Without grassroots basketball, there’s no professional basketball,” he said.

“It’s where it all begins. You need somewhere where kids can learn the basics and fall in love with the game, and that’s at the grassroots level.

“It’s so rewarding to be a part of because you see people grow in front of your eyes.

“I had a mum come up to me and thank me for getting her daughter involved for her first season at our presentation day. Winning games and scoring points didn’t matter, it was all about providing an opportunity to come together with friends and have fun.

“Then on the other side, you have the kids that develop their skill on the court and become really strong players.”

As a Melbourne United Grassroots Member club, Magro said having the connection to United is great to showcase a real pathway to the highest level of basketball in Australia.

“Kids can see the guys on the team and hear their stories. Not everyone took the same path, so it’s special to have them be able to connect with the guys they see on the court.”
