Grassroots Basketball Stories - Y Streetball

While grassroots basketball is often associated with hoops at the junior level, there are a number of organisations around Melbourne that are opening their doors to anyone looking to hit the court and enjoy the game.
That is the case out at the North Melbourne Community Centre, which acts as the home for Y Streetball, a free basketball program open to anyone within the community.
Founded in March 2017 by YMCA volunteers Dave and Pete, the program exists to support adults experiencing homelessness or disadvantage, giving participants a chance to socialise with new friends both on and off the court.
Running three nights per week, Y Streetball has played host to nearly 5000 participants over the years.
North Melbourne Community Centre Manager, Allysha Morris, touched on the importance of programs such as this, while talking about the connections she has seen develop through Y Streetball.
“Programs like this remove barriers to sport,” she said.
“It gives people a safe, welcoming space to be active, connect, and belong. It’s about more than just basketball, it supports health, confidence, and community.
“People come for basketball but stay for the connections. Teammates become friends, and participants find a supportive community they look forward to seeing and playing basketball with.”
