Just days out from his Melbourne United return, Yudai Baba is pumped up.

After helping the Texas Legends to a 6-2 record to start the G-League season, Baba departed the team, and has been eagerly waiting for his chance to take to the court.

Following Thursday’s practice, the Japanese speedster spoke to the media, declaring his readiness to impact the game on both ends.

“Since I came to Melbourne, I’ve been ready to play,” he said.

“I’m feeling so good. I hadn’t had a team practice in around three months, so I’m so glad to be back on the court with those guys. We won that championship last year together, so I feel so good (to be back).”

Playing a larger role with Texas, Baba thrived, averaging 12.5 points per game on 50/40/90 shooting splits.

While he admitted the two leagues are very different, he believes the development he experienced will carry over in his second stint with United.

“When you compare the NBL to the G League, it’s completely different, but I can say I was able to grow up.

“On the offensive side and of course the defensive side, I can say as a player I grew up in a lot of ways. I just want to contribute to the team, to get a win, that’s not going to change.

I don’t rush at all… every game and every practice, I just want to cherish every moment.”

Perhaps the most exciting part of Yudai’s return to Melbourne will be the experience of playing in front of a full John Cain Arena crowd for the first time.

“I’m so excited, because of COVID last season I couldn’t experience a full arena. Our next game is going to be a big game for us and for fans.

“I believe a lot of fans will be coming, it’s going to be so crowded, I’m going to enjoy every moment.”

Tickets for Baba’s return to JCA against the Illawarra Hawks on Saturday 2 April are on sale NOW.
