Melbourne United have come up short in their third game of the 2021 Hungry Jack's NBL Blitz, going down to the Illawarra Hawks.
In a frantic first quarter, it was Caleb Agada that led the way for United.
Agada opened the scoring with a transition triple, which he quickly repeated a few possessions later, although this time with a hand in his face.
He finished the term with 10 points, matching the effort of Illawarra’s Antonius Cleveland, who attacked from all over the court to score 10 of his own points.
Next Star import Ariel Hukporti also saw his first minutes of action for United, playing some solid defence, bringing great energy and registering his first points at the free-throw line.
Missed free throws would ultimately cost Melbourne the lead going into quarter-time, as five of Melbourne’s 10 attempts failed to find the bottom of the net.
After a much slower start to the second term from both teams, Melbourne’s energy picked right back up, thanks in part to some highlight plays from Hukporti.
Big A threw down a pair of monster dunks, followed by an impressive layup that had the United bench up on their feet.
Finishing the half with eight points in seven minutes, Hukporti acted as a catalyst for the rest of the team, resulting in an 18-5 run to close the quarter.
Shea Ili, Mason Peatling, David Okwera, Brad Newley and Jo Lual-Acuil all impressed across the second term to help United take a 61-52 lead going into the main break.
Much like the first 10 minutes, the game was played at a truly insane pace over the third quarter.
It was however the Hawks who took advantage of the speed of the contest, getting open shots inside and out, while limiting United’s effectiveness.
Illawarra outscored Melbourne 23-10 to take a 75-71 lead into the final term.
In a back-and-forth final term, United had their chances to take control of the game.
JLA proved again that NBL22 looks to be a big year for him, finishing the game with 20 points and nine rebounds, while CG43 hit some clutch shots on his way to 19 points.
Illawarra however proved too resilient down the stretch, remaining in the driver's seat to secure the win.
Cleveland, Xavier Rathan-Mayes and Duop Reath all nailed crucial baskets in the final minutes in the 97-90 victory.
United’s next game will be next Sunday against South East Melbourne Phoenix.
