The 31-year-old has won three NZNBL Championships with the Wellington Saints and one NBL Championship with the New Zealand Breakers. He will suit up in the NZNBL’s Semi Final this Thursday night, followed by the Grand Final should the Saints progress.

The 195cm shooting guard has played over 50 games in the NBL across three seasons, most recently with the Sydney Kings. Melbourne United Head Coach Dean Vickerman worked with Prewster during his time at the Kings.

Prewster has also represented New Zealand at a national level, playing for the Tall Blacks on several occasions, including in 2009 when he captained the Junior Tall Blacks. He most recently represented his country at the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers.

Melbourne United Head Coach Dean Vickerman said: “We are really excited to welcome Dion to the team and to our city. He led the Wellington Saints to the finals this year and showed us that he’s elite at the defensive end.

“We believe his defensive versatility will complement our system and we congratulate him on being named the Defensive Player of the Year this week.

“Offensively, we have loved the advancement and growth in his pick and roll decision making. He plays the right way, when he’s on the court he makes other players around him better, will add to our culture and is hungry for team success.

“Our roster is really coming together now and as coaching staff, we’re excited about what we are building. We are confident that this team will put us at the front of the pack in NBL22 and put us right up there to contest for a second consecutive NBL Championship.”
