Melbourne United to feature in first NBL Christmas Day game

An Australian professional sporting first will take place on Christmas Day this year when Melbourne United play the Sydney Kings at Qudos Bank Arena.
The historic meeting between two of the League’s biggest clubs is locked in for the 2022/23 Hungry Jack’s NBL season and pits United against the defending champion Kings during prime time on Sunday night at 7:30pm.
“We are thrilled to be bringing such a massive encounter to Christmas Day, particularly given we will be the first professional sport in this country to do so,” NBL Commissioner Jeremy Loeliger said.
“Sports fans across Australia and New Zealand have been asking for live sport on Christmas and we are excited to bring them world-class basketball and entertainment on what is a very special day for so many.
“Christmas Day has become a marquee day on the NBA calendar and we’re confident it will have a similar impact for us and our clubs.”
Sydney Kings Co-Owner and Chairman Paul Smith called the event a “game changer” for Australian sport.
“It’s the last scheduling frontier in sport in Australia,” Smith said.
“We are a changing society. Christmas isn’t a holy event for all of us, and it can be a lonely day for a lot of people.”
“It’s a game changer.”
Melbourne United fans will be able to tune in and watch the blockbuster game on Christmas Day at 7:30pm AEDT via 10 Peach and ESPN.
