With Metropolitan Melbourne and surrounds facing yet another round of School Holidays in lockdown, Melbourne United decided to take the 2 Day Junior Basketball Camps online, bringing back United at Home Virtual Basketball Clinics.
For one-hour on each Monday and Thursday afternoon of the two-week holidays Melbourne United’s virtual clinics saw over 2,010 children participating in a variety of basketball skills and games from their homes.
Hosted by Melbourne United staff, each session included basketball drills and games, followed by some special Melbourne United guests who each joined to participate in some Q&A, and to share their journeys of becoming professional basketball players. Melbourne United players including Jo Lual-Acuil Jr., David Barlow, Brad Newley, Mason Peatling, Callum Dalton and Jack White all jumped online to talk to the United at Home participants.
Jack White kept the young audience captivated with some exclusive insights and stories of his time playing with Zion Williamson and RJ Barrett at Duke University. Brad Newley was kind enough to join multiple sessions and share more about his incredible journey to signing with Melbourne United for what will be his 11th season in the NBL.
While the wider Victorian community navigates its way through such a tough time, Melbourne United continues to innovate and adapt to the ever-changing conditions so that all basketball fans can continue to interact with their favourite players, while remaining active through the sport of basketball.
Thank you to everyone who jumped online and participated, it was a joy to see so many people in their backyards and living rooms engaging with the clinics. Some even toughing out the rain during Thursday’s session.
Thank you also to the Melbourne United networks and schools who shared the clinics on their social media or in their newsletters.
Melbourne United is confident of delivering the regular School Holiday 2 Day Junior Basketball camps during the January School Holidays. Information regarding registration will be available on the website and social media in late-2021.
