Mitsubishi Match Recap: Hungry Jack’s NBL26 - Play-In Qualifier v Tasmania JackJumpers

Melbourne United have secured a 14-point victory against the Tasmania JackJumpers on Thursday evening in the do-or-die Play-In Qualifier game.

United got off to a hot start, with Tyson Walker and Finn Delany each connecting from deep.

The latter added a layup following a Chris Goulding steal, and Dash Daniels got in on the defensive action, swatting a shot at the rim.

Despite missing some key pieces, the JackJumpers played with energy, leading by as many as seven points.

United were however able to wrestle back some momentum, going on a 7-2 run thanks to a Goulding mid-ranger, Kyle Bowen layup, and buzzer-beating Tanner Krebs three-ball, but still trailed 15-17 after 10 minutes.

Looking to keep this run going, Melbourne stayed aggressive, playing great defence which created strong opportunities.

Delany got in the paint for three more finishes at the rim, Krebs connected from deep again and Shea Ili got in the paint for a tough runner, flipping the lead and pushing United ahead by nine.

Tasmania stayed resilient, doing all they could to match Melbourne’s intensity.

This kept the contest close, however Milton Doyle produced some terrific plays late in the term, sinking a turn-around jumper and a stepback three to give the home side a 40-31 advantage at half time.

Coming out of the major break, United attacked the paint, forcing their way to the free throw line.

This helped them hold off the JackJumpers for much of the period, however the offence stalled to close the period, with the visitors going on an 8-1 run to set the score at 56-55 with one term remaining.

Needing a spark, Delany built upon his best scoring game of the season to lift United.

The star forward got Melbourne going with a tip in before slashing to the hoop for a layup and cashing in on an open three.

This opened the floodgates, and United were able to get on a roll offensively to close the game.

Doyle and Krebs each made their long-range looks, while Fabijan Krslovic finished at the hoop.

Fittingly, it was Delany who scored the games final points at the free throw line, bringing his total to an equal career-best 33 points.

This helped to outscore the JackJumpers 26-13 in the fourth and register a 82-68 victory.

This means Melbourne United will face off against Perth Wildcats at 8pm on Saturday 7 March in the final Play-In game.
