Melbourne United have made it two wins from two games in Round 10 after overcoming the Perth Wildcats at home on Sunday afternoon.
It was an aggressive start for Melbourne United, as Jesse Edwards deflected a Wildcats pass right to Tyson Walker, who raced down the court for the opening score.
Chris Goulding, Finn Delany and Milton Doyle all followed suit with their own scores in the paint before Doyle extended his range out to the three-point line, cashing in from deep to help United go ahead by as many as eight points.
Solid minutes from the bench, including a pair of makes from Fabijan Krslovic and Kyle Bowen, helped hold off Perth for much of the term.
The Wildcats were however able to make a run late, reducing the margin to two points; 24-22, despite a powerful dunk from Edwards.
Eager to build on their advantage, United found success through Dash Daniels to begin the second.
The 17-year-old got inside for a pair of layups, which sandwiched an elite defensive possession leading to a Tanner Krebs three.
It was Doyle that got the crowd on their feet following this, slashing inside for a poster dunk and knocking down his second triple.
Edwards and Bowen each capitalised on their opportunities in the post before Delany scored on a great out of bounds play, once again bringing the Melbourne lead up to eight points.
As they did in the first period, the Wildcats were able to fight back, bringing the home side’s advantage back to two points.
Walker was however able to use his speed in the final seconds to score at the basket, giving United a 51-47 lead at the major break.
Coming out of half time, Walker got Melbourne going, racing down the court for a fast break layup off a great feed from Doyle.
Doyle then switched from facilitator back to scorer, knocking down two more three pointers to bring his total up to 20 points.
Edwards then got in on the action, rising up for two slams, one of which came in the dying seconds of the period.
After Perth showed grit to push ahead briefly, this allowed United to go ahead once again, leading 74-73 after three quarters.
Having had a difficult scoring evening, Chris Goulding was not deterred, staying aggressive in the final period.
United’s captain got into the key for a layup, before all three of Melbourne’s import trio scored inside the paint to help them go up by as many as seven points.
Goulding then added a three-pointer, making it 109 consecutive games where he has done so.
The Wildcats roared back into the contest however, cutting the lead to just two points with two minutes remaining.
Edwards' effort was crucial down the stretch, pulling one of his eight offensive rebounds and feeding Bowen for a layup to make it a four point game.
After getting a big stop, the ball was put in Walker’s hands with 40 seconds remaining, and the star from New York did not disappoint, splashing a three off the dribble to ice the game.
United would ultimately finish with a 98-87 victory, improving their record to 13-2 heading into the FIBA Window break.
