Melbourne United have dominated the New Zealand Breakers to close out the opening Round of the Hungry Jack’s NBL26 season.
Eager to put on a show for the United faithful, Dean Vickerman’s side came out on fire inside John Cain Arena.
A pair of Finn Delany buckets got Melbourne started, before Jesse Edwards showcased his dominance around the rim, adding eight quick points.
Milton Doyle did his damage from outside, cashing in on two triples, while his fellow import guard Tyson Walker provided elite defensive intensity, which led to a layup of his own.
When the starters hit the bench, the production stayed strong, with Dash Daniels, Tanner Krebs and Tom Wilson all scoring, while Fabijan Krslovic anchored the defence.
Melbourne tallied 10 assists on their 14 first quarter makes, while limiting the Breakers to just 28% shooting from the field, which opened up a 34-15 advantage to close the period.
Looking to extend the lead, Malith Machar tallied his first points for the season, sinking a free throw and finishing a layup.
Shea Ili followed this up with a turnaround jumper, which preceded another huge Edwards slam and a Krebs and-one make at the rim.
A Dash Daniels floater and Tom Wilson alley-oop layup extended the lead out to 15 points, however the Breakers were able to bring the margin back down to 22 points to close the period.
Coming out of half time, United kept the foot on the gas, knocking down threes and dominating the paint.
At the defensive end, Walker shined again, getting his body in front and taking a charge, while Kyle Bowen went upstairs to swat a shot at the hoop.
This helped Melbourne push their lead beyond 30 points, with a Krslovic buzzer-beater giving the home side a 89-55 buffer with one quarter to go.
With the result all but in hand, United continued to impress across the final 10 minutes of play.
Edwards swatted a pair of shots, Doyle added five quick points to his total, and Krebs brought his total up to 16 points off the bench.
A Daniels triple in the closing minutes sealed the deal on a big 114-82 victory for Melbourne, improving their record to 2-0 to start the season.
United will next take the floor on Thursday for a Throwdown clash with the South East Melbourne Phoenix from 7:30pm inside John Cain Arena.
