Peatling’s career night propels United

While the vast majority of attention following United’s Sunday evening victory went towards the milestone pair of Chris Goulding and Brad Newley, Melbourne’s coaches heaped praise on one of the side’s unsung heroes.

For much of the game, Mason Peatling led the way for the home side in the scoring and rebounding departments, finishing with a career-high 19 points to go along with 11 rebounds.

After giving Peatling the starting nod for the first time this season, Head Coach Dean Vickerman was thoroughly impressed by the output from his four-man.

“Just an unbelievable game from him,” he said in the post-game press conference.

“He’s had a really good two or three games in a row and was rewarded with the starting spot. (I was impressed by) the two three-ball’s, I thought the connection with CG in hand-offs and rolling to the rim (was great), some of the sprints that he had (were great).

“We hope he can be a little bit of Shea Ili at the four with just all the effort plays that he can come up with… he was great.”

These sentiments were echoed by Assistant Coach Darryl ‘Dmack’ McDonald, who has seen Peatling’s recovery from off-season knee surgery up close as the two were together with the Knox Raiders for the NBL1 season..

“Mase was big… Hits a couple of threes, has 11 rebounds, he was six for six in the first half,” Dmack said.

“He’s doing a lot of the little things and for him coming back off injury and having a game like that is big for him. For him to step up like that is really big for us.”

Peatling will take to the court in front of the Melbourne United faithful one final time in 2022 when his side hosts the Cairns Taipans in the much anticipated return of the Open Air Game.
