The Hungry Jack’s NBL has today announced changes to the Round 20 schedule due to the COVID situation developing in Melbourne.
As part of those changes, Melbourne United’s home game against the Cairns Taipans that was scheduled for 7:30pm on Monday May 31st at John Cain Arena will now be played at Cairns Pop-Up Arena in Queensland, at the same scheduled time.
By relocating from a potentially escalating hotspot, it gives the club the best chance of being able to participate in the Finals uninterrupted.
Hungry Jack’s NBL Commissioner Jeremy Loeliger said: “The health and safety of our players, coaches, referees, staff and fans remains our number one priority and, as always, our decisions will be guided by the advice of the relevant health authorities.”
The team are currently in Brisbane, preparing to play against the Kings in Sydney on Saturday night. The team will then fly to Cairns on Sunday in order to play the Taipans on Monday night.
All ticket purchasers for the game originally scheduled to be played at John Cain Arena on Monday 31st May will be refunded and will be contacted directly by Ticketek. No decision has yet been made for the club’s home game against the Adelaide 36ers on June 6th.
The club is currently working through what this means for all other stakeholders including Members and will provide an update as soon as possible.
The relocation of the game is unfortunate, as the team love nothing more than playing in front of our members and fans at John Cain Arena. Melbourne United remains focused on competing for the NBL21 Championship and look forward to returning to Melbourne to play in front of our home crowd.
