Teammates, coaches praise ‘confident’ Okwera

Written by Melbourne United Media

Melbourne United young-gun David Okwera has been lauded by those within the team for his recent performances, including a career-best 13-point effort in United’s Throwdown XVII win on Sunday evening.

After receiving seldom minutes in his first year as a development player, ‘Dsav’ as he is known within the team, spent the offseason working on his game with David Barlow, who coached the 20-year-old across the NBL1 season.

Now, as a fully-rostered member of United’s squad, Okwera’s skill is shining through.

Thrust into the starting lineup for Melbourne’s last four games, Dsav has helped propel his side to a 3-1 record, while averaging 8.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.5 blocks and a steal per game.

Speaking at the post-game press conference following United’s 110-85 demolition of the SEM Phoenix, Melbourne captain Chris Goulding praised Okwera for his development and growing confidence.

He’s smart, he knows how to play… he’s given us a great switch up and great minutes,” he said.

“I think the year he had under Barlow in the NBL1 just gave him confidence to play in that system and translate that into our team.

“When he plays with that confidence and knows when he’s going to get a certain amount of minutes or that there’s a big responsibility thrown upon him he’s been great.

“He shoots the ball really well… teams are obviously testing that and that’s impressive to have that confidence in your shot when teams are disrespecting you.”

These sentiments were echoed by Assistant Coach Justin Schueller, who added the best is yet to come when it comes to Okwera’s ability to contribute to winning basketball.

“He’s making constant steps forward which is outstanding in his development,” he continued.

“It was another great challenge for him to go against a Mitch Creek and hold his own.  It’s great that he gets his career high, I think there’s so much more he can bring to the table as well.”

Fans will get their next chance to see Dsav take to the court at John Cain Arena on Thursday 17 November when United host the Adelaide 36ers. Tickets are available here.
