Travers settling into new Melbourne surrounds

He may have only been in Melbourne for a few days, but Luke Travers put in the work in his new United training gear and looked very comfortable.

The star forward impressed in his first training session alongside Assistant Coach Rhys Carter and David Barlow, cashing threes and throwing down dunks at Hoop City Cheltenham.

Speaking to media after his time on court, Travers touched on his excitement to soon join forces with the likes of Jo Lual-Acuil Jr, Chris Goulding and Shea Ili.

“(This group is) talented, but they know a lot, they’ve got a lot of experience which is big for me being only 21,” he said.

“I want to learn as much as I can from guys like Newls and Barlow as well. To be able to learn from guys like that every day is something I’m really looking forward to.”

Looking at how he will operate within the United system, the athletic 21-year-old sees himself playing a similar role to that of NBL23 MVP Xavier Cooks.

“I think it will be a lot more at the four,” he explained.

“Going from last year I think of Xavier Cooks, his sort of role that he had at Sydney. The sort of offence that’s built here, it’s swinging it to the four in the trail spot and a lot goes through there, so to have that and the ball in my hands a bit more is something that I’m looking forward to.

“I think Dean’s put the trust in me, so that’s good to have.”

Friday was also the first day Head Coach Dean Vickerman got to see Travers in the MU blue, and needless to say, he was excited.

“He looked good in blue,” Vickerman said with a chuckle.

“You see him on the floor… There's a lot of things that we like but a lot of upside that we can take that next step with him.”
