Lockdown life has been tough for all Melburnians, but for Mitch McCarron he’s had exciting news to share through isolation.

The 28-year-old has recently returned to the practice court alongside the rest of the team in the lead up to next season, which is expected to start in early 2021.

Away from the court, the 28-year-old shared the exciting news that he’s expecting his first child with wife Abby.

“We’re expecting our first child which is really exciting for both of us,” he said.

“It was some really positive news. We’ve been frustrated being in lockdown and not able to see people, so to get that kind of news was pretty great for both of us.”

McCarron is a massive Brisbane Lions fan and has been a keen onlooker this season as the side has flourished.

While they bowed out of the finals against Geelong, McCarron said he was happy to have the AFL and live sport in general back on TV during the pandemic.

“It was a rough weekend (in the preliminary final),” he said.

“At the same time, it’s been great to be able to sit at home and watch live sport. There was a time there for a couple of weeks where there was no live sport (due to the pandemic) and I was like ‘what do I even have a TV for?’.

“It was cool to be able to get back and watch people playing sports, to see so many people being affected by job cuts, it was great to see some leagues get back and going again and that will be our turn again soon.”

On court, McCarron is rapt to see the progress being made by him and his teammates.

Dealing with the challenges posed by the current restrictions, he said regular Zoom catchups have been crucial in keeping strong communication within the group.

“It’s been great to be back with the players on a regular basis,” he told Melbourne United Media.

“We have some new faces in the group, so it’s been great to get around them and get them used to things like training and weights.

“Our sessions have been different this year, for us there has been no contact since returning so everything has been about social distancing and all the drills are done individually. We’re really getting after it in the weights room.

“We’ve had a ton of Zoom meetings just making sure we’re staying in touch and talking about everything we possibly can while we can’t be doing scrimmage.

“Usually we’d be gearing up for the season and had 10 or 12 pre-season games, but we’re still waiting for that contact.”

Mitch also had one key message for the United fans and members,

“My message to United fans would be to stay locked in & stay ready - because I think we’re going to have as many opportunities as previous seasons for you to support the team”
