United Multicultural Stories: Centre for Multicultural Sport

While sport has always been viewed as one of the world’s great equalisers, issues such as racism can still impact those looking to participate and feel included across different codes.
Research shows that 66% of community sport participants in Australia have experienced or witnessed racism in sport, yet only one in three formally report these incidents.
That is why the work done by organisations such as the Centre for Multicultural Sport (CMSport) is so crucial.
CMSport have recently put together the Anti-Racism in Sport project, which in partnership with AFL Victoria, Basketball Victoria, Cricket Victoria, Football Victoria, Netball Victoria, NRL Victoria and Tennis Victoria, represents a first-of-its-kind collaboration to tackle racism in Victorian sport.
Funded by Sport and Recreation Victoria and supported by VicHealth and Vicsport, this initiative brings together sport, research and community, in a shared effort to strengthen community sport as a more inclusive, culturally safe and respectful environment for all Victorians.
This project is about collective leadership, with each sport taking responsibility to address racism within its own structures while learning from each other.
Each sporting body brings its own culture, challenges and audience, but all share a commitment to embedding cultural safety and anti-racism as core values, not optional extras. By connecting their efforts, the project ensures that change is consistent across codes and communities.
With over 35 years of experience through the Centre for Multicultural Youth, CMSport provides practical training, resources and systems change support that empower the sector to address racism, build inclusive leadership, and strengthen participation for all.
