United prepare to bolster roster in Free Agency

With NBL Free Agency kicking off in less than 24 hours, Melbourne United Head Coach Dean Vickerman has given fans some insight into what he is looking for to round out his side going into next season.

Having coached the league’s top defence across the past two seasons, Vickerman said he will continue to search for players that fit well within his lock-down system, while adding some shooting from the outside.

“We would like to maintain our elite defence and team culture fit in all recruits coming to United,” he said.

“But more specifically we are looking to add more consistent shooting across the board with all remaining additions to the roster.”

With nine players confirmed to be returning from last season so far, including the recently announced Brad Newley and Jo Lual-Acuil Jr voicing his want to play for Melbourne if he returns to the NBL, Vickerman said United may take their time searching for the right people to fill out the remainder of the roster.

“We have three roster and a number of Development Player positions available for the NBL23 season and will be looking at elite local, Asian and import talent over the next few months.

“With a great high percentage of returning players we have the ability to be patient and ensure we find the perfect fit for our team needs.”

Throughout the entire recruitment process, a key factor of Vickerman will be ensuring players fit into the culture United has built over the past few years.

“It’s just as important for any players coming in to fit in with our culture off the court as they do on the court.

“We’ve built a culture and trademark that we’re proud of and that has brought us sustained success. Players need to live our values on the court, but also need to do the same within the community.”
