Melbourne United are excited to announce the signing of dynamic young guard Flynn Cameron to a three year contract, with the final season carrying a mutual option.

Following five years in the NCAA college system with DePaul and UC Riverside, Cameron will embark on his first professional season under the tutelage of Dean Vickerman and his MU coaching staff.

An explosive guard with a strong frame, the 22-year-old New Zealand native has showcased his skill on the international level, starring for the Tall Blacks in their Bronze medal win at the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup.

Across the seven-game tournament, Cameron led his nation in points (13.3) and assists (4.9).

The son of New Zealand basketball legend Pero Cameron, who won 11 Championships as a player and coach across the ditch, Flynn brings with him a burning hunger for success.

Speaking to MU Media, the guard touched on his feelings ahead of arriving in Melbourne.

“I was just super excited to have Melbourne interested,” he said.

“Knowing who we have as a coach, coach Dean (Vickerman), I’ve seen him throughout NZNBL and in the NBL. He coached my dad in the NZNBL, I thought that was pretty cool to have the opportunity to play for him, it’s a bit of a full circle moment.

“To be able to put on the Melbourne United uniform is something I can’t wait to do.”

Looking at what he can bring to this team immediately, Head Coach Dean Vickerman said he can’t wait to get Cameron on the court alongside United’s other stars.

“Flynn Cameron’s someone we’ve been watching for a number of years in college,” he said.

“He’s a combo guard that’s big and strong at 6’5. We love his strength, he’s a good athlete that we believe will be able to sit down in a stance and defend multiple positions and shoot the basketball at a really high level.

“Any environment you put him in, he has the ability to rise to the next level. What he’s done in college, he’s just continued to get better every year. With our success with signing guys out of college recently with Jack White and Mason Peatling, we’ve seen the benefit and the growth that have come from those deals.”

Cameron will join Chris Goulding, Shea Ili, Ariel Hukporti, Zac Triplett and Josh Duach as players signed for United’s NBL24 campaign so far.
