United stars sweep weekend of NBL1 games

Written by Melbourne United Media

Melbourne United’s stars have enjoyed a weekend full of exciting victories across the country in the NBL1.

Perhaps the biggest winner from the round was Brad Newley, as his Frankston Blues picked up a pair of road wins in Tasmania to move into first place in the NBL1 South Conference.

Newley contributed well across the round, averaging 18.5 points, six rebounds and two assists.

The Blues’ move up the ladder means that Cal Dalton and the Eltham Wildcats dropped into second-place, despite their enormous W over Casey.

Dalton top-scored for the Wildcats, dropping 29 points in the 48-point win.

Trailing just behind the top-two sides are the Sandringham Sabres, who continued their winning streak thanks to strong performances from both Campbell Blogg and David Barlow.

Blogg was solid, contributing 13 points, six rebounds and five assists, but it was Barlow’s sharpshooting that proved the difference in the game.

The 39-year-old forward splashed five triples, ultimately finishing with 17 points off the bench.

Also picking up two important wins was Zac Triplett and the Keilor Thunder, who lifted themselves back into the conference's top-10.

After a relatively comfortable win over Dandenong, the Thunder had to fight tooth and nail to pick up an overtime W over Geelong, which included a three-pointer from Triplett with less than 30 second remaining in regulation to tie the game.

Moving to the Central Conference, Malith Machar was dominant in Forestville’s win over the Eastern Mavericks.

United’s NBL23 Development Player tallied 25 points, 19 rebounds and a pair of blocks in the 20-point victory.
