Our NBAxNBL game against the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday evening will be refereed under NBA rules. These differ from NBL rules in a few ways:
This game will use the NBA three-point line, which sits 49cm further back than the NBL three-point line.
This game will be played with NBA 12-minute quarters, instead of NBL 10-minute quarters.
Each team is allowed five fouls per quarter before they reach the bonus (one more than NBL rules allow), and each player is allowed 6 personal fouls per game (one more than NBL rules allow).
Live-ball timeouts will be allowed, as per NBA rules. This means a player or coach can call a timeout while the ball is actively in play, and they have possession.
The NBA defensive three-second rule will be enforced in this game. A defensive three-second violation occurs when a defender remains in the lane (also known as the paint or key) for more than three seconds without actively guarding an opponent. The violation is called a team technical foul, resulting in one free throw and possession of the ball for the offense.
This will be the sixth time we have faced an NBA team, having previously battled against the Sacramento Kings, LA Clippers, Toronto Raptors, Philadelphia 76ers and the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Milton Doyle (Brooklyn Nets) and Jesse Edwards (Minnesota Timberwolves) have both previously played in the NBA under these rules, as has Tyson Walker during his time in the NBA G-League.
