Melbourne United is set to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the 1993 Melbourne Tigers NBL championship on Sunday afternoon against the Illawarra Hawks.
A superstar team featuring the likes of Andrew Gaze, Lanard Copeland, Mark Bradtke, Ray Gordon, Warrick Giddey and Dave Simmons, United will shine a spotlight on the group that delivered the organisation its first NBL championship.
Melbourne United CEO Nick Truelson touched on the importance of commemorating the achievements of that 1993 team.
“We are proud of honouring our past champions and this is a very special milestone that we wanted to shine a light on at a home game,” he said.
“With the Melbourne Tigers championship banners and retired players jerseys in the rafters at our game days, we look forward to thanking and congratulating the team as a whole.
“It is nearly 30 years to the day since the Tigers won their first ever championship so we are thrilled that we could play a small role in celebrating one of the best teams in NBL history.”
Pre-game, MU will be holding a function inside the John Cain Arena Sky Lounge for the team before they take a seat courtside in the Legends Box to watch all of the action when United and the Hawks hit the court.
The team will then be honoured at half-time as they run out onto the hardwood to celebrate the monumental achievement that highlighted what was a golden era for the NBL.
