Melbourne United are proud to unveil our NBL27 Multicultural Uniform, a completely new design celebrating the many cultures that make Melbourne, and our club, what it is.
The uniform is the seventh edition since the inaugural Multicultural Uniform was born out of our playing group during the 2020-21 NBL season, when players spoke openly about how racism had affected them and why standing up against it mattered.
This season's design features a new colour-led treatment down the side panels of the jersey and shorts, representing the diversity of colours and designs that make up the flags of the world.
The background of the jersey carries a pattern inspired by Federation Square, one of Melbourne's great meeting places, and represents the way in which we are all connected.
A refreshed UNITED wordmark sits across the front, while the statement of END RACISM keeps its place on the jersey. Each player's uniform is again individualised with the flags of the nations they represent, now featuring on both the front and back.
The uniform also debuts our new Multicultural Logo, which brings together the colours seen throughout the design.
“Being inclusive is one of our club’s core values, and the Multicultural Game is one of the best ways we get to live it,” Melbourne United CEO Nick Truelson said.
“Melbourne is one of the most diverse cities in the world, and our playing group, our Members and our fans reflect that. This uniform is a celebration of every one of those stories.
“The message hasn't changed since our players started this in 2020. Celebrating inclusion and diversity is so important – we see it as a strength, and we're proud to keep standing behind it.”
For big-man Josh Oduro, the uniform carries a personal connection to his Ghanaian and American heritage.
“Having my family's flags on my jersey means a lot to me,” Oduro said.
“My family's story is a big part of who I am, and to represent that in front of our fans, in a city with so many different cultures, is pretty special.”
We will first wear the uniform on the road against the Perth Wildcats at RAC Arena on Friday 23 October, Perth's own Multicultural Game, before bringing it home for our Multicultural Game against the NBL26 Champion Sydney Kings at John Cain Arena on Sunday 25 October.
Before tip-off, United's Multicultural Festival returns bigger and better on Melbourne Park Oval from 3pm to 5pm. Entry is free, with performances from ENGIE Superhoodz, Japanese drummers and Rhythm of Life African Drumming, a Battle of the Nations 3x3 showdown, food trucks, henna, face painting and plenty more for the kids. Fans are encouraged to wear or bring something that represents their cultural pride or family heritage, with prizes up for grabs throughout the afternoon. For the full festival line-up, click here.
The NBL27 Multicultural Jersey is on sale from Thursday 15 October via the Melbourne United online store, and will be available at our Merchandise Store at John Cain Arena from our game this Sunday 18 October.
