Vickerman explains why Delly was the perfect fit for United

Despite being over a year removed from his last stint with Melbourne United, incoming star Matthew Dellavedova is expected to slot perfectly back into the organisation.

Head Coach Dean Vickerman, who has worked tirelessly with the club to cultivate a winning culture (two Championships, five finals appearances in his six seasons), believes the way Delly operates will allow him to once again thrive within United’s system.

Speaking on SEN 1116 yesterday to Andrew Gaze and Andy Maher, Vickerman elaborated on how and why Dellavedova was brought back to United.

“Our culture, he lives it every day,” Vickerman said about Dellavedova.

“He’s a hard worker, he plays with desperation on the floor, he plays with an absolute passion. He’s unselfish the way that he plays basketball so all those things are always aligned with (our culture).

“There’s always the pathway of bringing these guys back from the NBA, which we all hope happens… to get him back at a good age where he’s still got a lot of basketball to offer is incredible.

“There was a little bit of chatter throughout the year that he may want to come back and really play good minutes and show his worth for the Boomers, and also (return for) some unfinished business with us.”

Dellavedova will look to build on the impressive play he showcased in NBL22, where he was named to the All-NBL 2nd Team, alongside Chris Goulding.

After a slow start to his first season with United, no player in the NBL shot the three-ball better than Delly over the final two-thirds of the season.

From Round 7 through to the end of the regular season, no player connected on as many threes per game (2.2) at a better percentage (43%) than Dellavedova.
