Coaches taking positives away from first pre-season hit-out

Despite falling short of the victory, Melbourne United’s coaches are taking plenty of positives away from the side’s loss to St Mary’s on Tuesday night.

Speaking after the game, Assistant Coach Rhys Carter, who took charge as the head coach on Tuesday, said he was impressed by some of United’s young stars.

“There were some real positives there, we do have to take a step back and realise we did only have one practice (prior to the game).

“There were some real flashes, young Josh Duach came out and had some really great moments defensively. Zac Triplett coming off a broken hand all offseason came in and hit some shots… we really saw some things from a lot of the guys that are real positives.”

Head Coach Dean Vickerman echoed many of these sentiments on RSN on Thursday morning, adding that his focus for the game ered more on the side of seeing what the side’s young new additions could do together.

“We would have loved to have been more competitive, but we got some benefit out of the game… It was about learning about some of the young talent that we had.

“We’ve got really good youth on our team this year. Makuach (Maluach) who’s playing in the NBL1 for Darwin, he’s playing really well, putting up 25 a game up there, he can be elite.”

Despite the 21-point loss, there’s still plenty of optimism around United as the team continues to mesh and add in local talent like Chris Goulding, Isaac Humphries and Mason Peatling, as well as their trio of dynamite imports, Rayjon Tucker, Jordan Caroline and Xavier Rathan-Mayes.
