Macdonald eager to continue growing at United

Five seasons into his professional career, Sean Macdonald believes he’s still yet to scratch the surface of what he can achieve in the NBL.

One of the key pieces that enticed the 26-year-old to sign with Melbourne United was to work alongside Head Coach Jacob Chance, who he had spent two years alongside with the Tasmania JackJumpers as a Development Player.

After signing a three year deal to come back to his home town, the guard touched on his excitement to be reunited with Chance.

“Having Chancey as my Head Coach is a huge benefit for me,” he explained.

“He was massive in my development in Tassie. He's got an excellent player-coach relationship, he does that at the top tier. That's just who he is as a person and those sort of values make it easy to play for someone when you know they're such a good person.

“I'm just excited to be part of his journey as well as he takes his first step as a Head Coach in the NBL. I think that's really exciting and obviously something he's been working towards for a while, so being there for when it comes to fruition is going to be really cool.”

Already one of the league’s deadliest long-range shooters, Macdonald is also eager to learn everything he can from new teammates Chris Goulding and Shea Ili.

Having battled against the pair for the first few years of his young career, Macdonald said getting to play alongside them will certainly be a welcome change.

“Their resumes speak for themselves. Chris is obviously one of, if not the best shooter in NBL history and just to be able to see his approach day-to-day and take any tips and hints I could off him and how he has managed to do it for so long is going to be great. 

“He's had a great career and he's still doing amazing things. Shea, just the impact he makes on a game is pretty special. 

“I've played a lot against them and it's not always fun because they're bloody tough to play against, so it'll be really nice to be on their team come game night. 

“Being able to train and play with guys like that every day is going to help me be the best player I can be once I’m able to get back on the court.”

Adding to the local talent surrounding Macdonald are the key additions of Joe Ingles and Sam Waardenburg.

The trio are all locked in for the NBL28 season, establishing an already imposing local core for United.

“Ingles’ experience in the NBA and national teams is huge to have at the club. I think the demeanour he brings and the confidence he'll give the rest of the group is super special and obviously Waardenburg, what he was able to do at Cairns was pretty special. 

“He's a unique talent, the way he moves at his size, it's really exciting to play with someone like that. “Knowing that I'll get a full season with both of those guys, regardless of what happens next season, is really exciting for me.”
