Melbourne United embraces NAIDOC Week

Melbourne United is proud to champion the theme of Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! for this year's NAIDOC Week.

United has always stood by the importance of connecting with First Nations people, and hopes to encourage young Indigenous athletes to be proud of who they are, and embrace their culture.

Through initiatives like proudly being the first sporting team to feature Melbourne’s traditional name of NARRM on our jerseys, to our partnership with the First Peoples’ Assembly of Victoria (the Assembly), and ongoing relationship with the Koorie Basketball Academy, Melbourne United will continue to encourage people to Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!

CEO Nick Truelson spoke about the significance of showing this support and actioning initiatives to help further equality and acceptance within the basketball landscape.

“Sport plays a very important role in raising awareness for social causes and through the power of basketball we look forward to playing a more active role in the Indigenous community.

“We feel as though this is a mutually beneficial relationship for us to not only upskill our learning but also educate ourselves to help make a real difference.”

“We pride ourselves on being an inclusive club on and off the court but we also know we have a lot more to learn.

“Initiatives like NAIDOC Week help us to embrace our focus on being inclusive and reflect on the small learning steps we have taken and will take into the future.”
