Travers committed to stepping ‘out of my comfort zone’

Written by Melbourne United Media

There were a plethora of reasons why sensational youngster Luke Travers made the move to Melbourne United in one of the biggest signings of the offseason.

An elite local core, combined with the club’s proven track record of developing stars and helping them reach the highest level of basketball were at the top of the list, however a want to step out of his comfort zone followed closely behind.

Travers, a Perth native, had lived his entire life in Western Australia, and wanted to make a move to help him focus fully on basketball.

“I think a big thing for me going into this was getting out of my comfort zone,” he told SEN 1116 on Wednesday.

LISTEN TO THE FULL INTERVIEW HERE:

“Obviously being at home with family and friends is always nice but I think going over there (Melbourne) it will just be a lot more basketball focussed. Going to training and heading back to an apartment and focusing on my body or going back to the gym later that day to work out.

“It’s more just an opportunity thing rather than coming home and playing video games with your mates or hanging out with family. It’s more just a decision to focus a bit more on basketball and take my game to the next level.”

Adding to the appeal of United was the knowledge that Head Coach Dean Vickerman would be alongside him for the foreseeable future, which was confirmed yesterday through the three-time NBL Championship winning coach’s four-year contract extension.

“What he (Vickerman) does for Melbourne, a lot is behind him. I think he just steadies the ship right and gets the most out of their players.

“That was the big deciding factor when it came to playing under him.”

Travers will get his first opportunity to suit up in a Melbourne uniform for the first time next season when United face off with the SEM Phoenix in Throwdown XXI to open the NBL24 season.
