United exercising patience in free agency

With the 2022/23 Hungry Jack’s NBL season fast approaching and Melbourne United’s fixture released, fans are keeping a close eye on who last year’s minor premiers will be bringing in for NBL23.

It’s been a patient offseason for United, who are yet to bring in players across a variety of positions, following the departure of a number of NBL22 players.

Speaking to MU Media, Head Coach Dean Vickerman said his side has been diligently building their roster, playing the waiting game for potential imports still in contention for spots on NBA teams.

“In the past we’ve found that some of the NBL’s most impactful imports are guys who have the ability to challenge for the final spot on an NBA roster,” he said.

Players on the fringe of NBA rosters are more likely to wait as long as possible to try and secure a spot on a team, before then looking to other jobs around the globe such as within the NBL. As a result, when building an NBL roster, patience can often be an underrated asset.

“We’re just taking our time to make sure whoever we sign will bring that elite skill level to our group,” he continued.

“We have a number of guys who we’ve been in contact with and keeping a close eye on that we know would make a big impact with United.”

United have already begun reworking their roster following the departure of key local pieces such as Jo Lual-Acuil Jr and Jack White, recently signing former NBA big man Isaac Humphries, as well as viral dunk star Makuach Maluach and DP Josh Duach.
