Junior Camp FAQs

What sets Melbourne United camps apart from other basketball camps?

Our camps are aimed towards the beginner to intermediate player who is looking for a great introduction to the game and the core fundamentals of basketball. An elite group of coaches will take your children through the basic skills and rules of the game in a friendly and welcoming environment. All participants have access to Melbourne United players. A player/s attends the camp following the lunch break and children are given the opportunity to hear from the player, ask questions as well as autograph and photo time. Players are not guaranteed to attend each camp as it depends on their training, playing and travel schedule.

Who are our 1 & 2 Day Camps best suited to?

Boys and girls, primary school age (5-12), beginner to intermediate level in basketball.

What will my child learn or gain at a camp?

Your child will learn new basketball skills and meet new friends. Children will learn skills of the game and will be able to implement these through different competitive drills. Skills include dribbling, passing, shooting, lay-ups, low post moves, rebounding/box out, defence and offensive moves. These skills can be showcased through our mini game scenarios such as 2 on 1, 3 on 2, 4 on 3, 2 on 2, 1 on 1, sideline and full court games. Children will also be taught some basic rules such as; travel, double dribble, cross court, taking the ball out of bounds and fouling. We have a heavy emphasis on teaching the children to pivot and develop good habits with the ball and being able to protect it from the opposition.

What does my child need to bring?

Participants are required to bring a spill-proof drink bottle, a packed lunch (no nut products), and a positive attitude!

Does my child need to bring a basketball?

If participating in a 2-Day Camp, a basketball will be given to all participants to keep upon signing in on day one of camp. This basketball can be taken home at the end of each day of camp and is for you to keep. If participating in a 1-Day Camp, we will supply a basketball for you to use on the day.

How are children grouped at camp?

Participants are separated into groups by age, and skill level. Once a child is assessed by our coaching staff, they will be placed in an appropriate group to ensure they have the best experience possible.

Can my child be in the same group as their sibling or a friend?

Where possible we can group participants together, please let the coach know on the day.

What is the coach to child ratio?

We ensure there is 1 coach for every 12-15 participants.

Can my child attend just one day of a 2-Day Camp?

Yes - however there are no discounts offered for only attending one day.

Will my child get individual time with the coaches?

All participants will be able to have individual time with the coaches. This will vary on the skill level of the group, but the coaches will endeavour to spend a little of their time with each participant.

What qualifications do the coaches have?

All camp coaches have a basketball background. Some have played or coached at an elite level such as the NBL, WNBL, NBL1, Big V, Youth League and VJBL. All coaches have a current Working With Children Check.
