‘Competitive fire burning’ ahead of Cairns clash

After a 7-0 start to the 2025-26 season, the drive for perfection continues to fuel our team’s play.
A Friday night matchup on the road against the Cairns Taipans will be the next time the team will take to the floor, and Captain Chris Goulding says strong practice days, like the one we had on Wednesday, are crucial to extending the winning streak moving forward.
“We don’t want to lose, so that tends to bring the whole session up and we had that today throughout all the drills which was good,” Goulding said.
“I think the coaches drive it (the competitiveness), and day-to-day different players drive it as well. They take it to another level with their competitiveness.
“I think we should all have a mindset that eliminates the complacency. It’s a long season and I’ve been a part of seasons before like this and sometimes it does creep in.
“It’s front of mind, we want to try and win every game we can, so sessions like today keep us in good stead for keeping that competitive fire burning and wanting to go and put that against opposition rather than against ourselves.”
Head Coach Dean Vickerman echoed this, touching on the team’s mindset when it comes to producing consistent results on the court.
“Our whole message in review is to continue to show things in review that we need to get better at,” Vickerman explained.
“We’ve kind of broken down the season in lots of three days, so right now we’ve just won one game of the next three games.
“I think it’s been a good way for the boys to keep resetting and keep focussing on trying to win three in a row.”
Fans can tune in to see us face the Taipans from 7:30pm on Friday evening via ESPN.
The team will then return home for the matchup with the Adelaide 36ers inside John Cain Arena from 2:30pm on Sunday 26 October.
