Travers, Chance, ready to Throwdown against Phoenix

With Melbourne United’s matchup against the South East Melbourne Phoenix in Throwdown 33 only two days away, Head Coach Jacob Chance and star forward Luke Travers laid out their approach to Thursday’s game, and their potential for growth as a side going forward. 

Playing in what will be his fourth Throwdown, the first since his return from the NBA G-League, Travers is excited to be back as a part of the crosstown rivalry.

“These (fans) are here to really support you. I remember my last (away) Throwdown was 50-50 almost (in the crowd), so it's a lot of fun to play in that kind of atmosphere,” Travers said.

The two way forward is 3-0 for United in Throwdowns, averaging 15 points per game on 53% shooting in the matchups, and is looking to keep that record perfect with a win on Thursday.

“I feel like last time, I don't want to say it, but people [were calling it] the ‘Throw-up’, but this time they're really competitive. We (played) them in the pre-season and they took one ahead of us, they're looking good and I think we'll be ready for it,” Travers added. 

For Chance, the matchup is an opportunity to build on United’s season opener against the Adelaide 36ers, and come away with his first win as United’s Head Coach.

“I think it's a great rivalry that's building in our sport between two great teams,” Chance said. 

“South East are playing really well right now and had a great season last season… and obviously us being Melbourne United, the premier club in the city. (It’s) a great opportunity to test ourselves against a really good team early in the season.” 

Following an intense practice, Chance spoke on the importance of Travers’ aggressiveness in the open court in Thursday’s matchup, and for the season going forward. 

“It's always his biggest strength in the open court,” Chance explained. 

“How unselfish (Travers) is and his willingness to make plays for other guys. I think that'll be the best version of Melbourne United, when we have all of our guys on the front foot being aggressive, and (Travers is) certainly a big part of that.”

United next take the court as the away team in Throwdown 33, presented by AXS, inside John Cain Arena against the South East Melbourne Phoenix on Thursday 24 September from 7:30pm.
