Travers, Waardenburg showcase strength in first preseason matchup

In their first preseason game ahead of the Hungry Jack’s NBL27 season, the duo of Luke Travers and Sam Waardenburg showcased exactly how dangerous they can be at both ends of the floor.

Facing off against B.LEAGUE United, a select team of up-and-coming Japanese players on Sunday afternoon, the pair did a bit of everything on the court, combining for 41 points, 19 rebounds, 13 and assists.

Having both dominated NBL competition across different stretches of their careers, United fans will be hoping the contest is a preview of what is to come in NBL27.

Speaking prior to the game, Travers touched on his goals for the season, while also outlining how he and Waardenburg can help elevate each other to the highest level.

“I want to be one of the better players in the league, and that starts with the defensive end,” he said.

“That's going to be locking down their best player. Obviously, we're going to have Shea as well, but helping him out any way I can, and then pushing on the offensive end as well.

“The NBL's a little different to the NBA. Obviously, there's not a bunch of seven-footers running around and freak athletes as well, so I'm going to really look to take advantage of that by getting out in transition and getting downhill as much as I can.

“Getting back here and dominating and putting my best foot forward and also winning, I feel like is the best opportunity for me and the best spot to be um to get me back to the NBA.

“Sam's obviously someone that's pretty solidified in this league and is a really good player. So I think his goal is to get to the NBA as well, we're all going to try and help each other get there.”

Travers, Waardenburg and the rest of United’s stars will next play against the South East Melbourne Phoenix on 22 August from 7pm.
